Emmitt Smith’s NFL Career

Emmitt Smith was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 1990 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he quickly demonstrated that he was going to be an integral part of the team. During his first season, he rushed for 937 yards and 11 touchdowns, earning him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and the first of eight career Pro Bowl selections.

The following season, Smith rushed for a league-leading 1,563 yards. In a span of five years, he won four rushing titles, led the NFL in rushing touchdowns three times and added 277 pass receptions. His best year came in 1995 when he recorded career highs for rushing yards with 1,773, rushing touchdowns with 25, and receptions with 62. For 11 straight seasons, Smith hit the 1,000-yard rushing mark. He narrowly missed the mark by 25 yards in his final season with Dallas.

As you would expect, Smith had a big impact on the Cowboys’ success and helped lead them to the top of the NFL. With Smith leading the way, the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in four seasons from 1992 to 1995. During that period, Smith was a first-team All-Pro Selection each year. In 1993, he was named the NFL’s MVP and earned MVP honors after the Cowboys’ win in Super Bowl XXVIII.

Smith ended his career by playing two final seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s, Smith retired with a career total of 18,355 yards and an NFL record of 164 rushing touchdowns. He also finished with 515 receptions for 3,224 yards and 11 touchdowns.
