Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2016 Highlight: Dick Stanfel

You could say Dick Stanfel has been on the Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot for quite some time. Prior to 2016, he was twice a finalist as a Senior Candidate – once in 1993 and again in 2012. Now, his impressive career is being rewarded as he joins seven others in the Class of 2016.

NFL Career

Stanfel Dick

Dick Stanfel was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 1951 NFL Draft. He actually missed his rookie season due to a knee injury he sustained at practice for the College All-Star Game. However, he immediately won a starting spot upon his return the next year.

During his first three seasons, the Lions advanced to the NFL championship game each year and also won back-to-back world titles in 1952 and 1953. He was named Team MVP in 1953, which is a rare honor for an offensive lineman.

After four seasons with Detroit, Stanfel was traded to the Washington Redskins, where he reunited with his college coach Joe Kuharich. He played three seasons with the Redskins and was widely regarded as one of the NFL’s elite players.

During his seven seasons in the NFL, he earned first-team All-Pro honors five times and was voted to four Pro Bowls. He was also named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1950s.

Stanfel retired at age 31 as one of the original 70 greatest Redskins players and then went on to pursue a coaching career. For 29 years, he was one of the best assistant coaches in the league, winning a Super Bowl ring as the Chicago Bears’ offensive line coach in 1985.

Unfortunately, he will not be able to see his tremendous success rewarded; he passed away in 2015 at the age of 87.
